Kia takes the wraps off its long-awaited K9 rear-wheel-drive luxury sedan!

After showing us a couple of KH teaser sketches earlier this month, Kia today released the very-first official images of the new K9 luxury sedan.

Although the model was first teased as a KH sedan, Kia announced its first-ever rear-wheel-drive luxury sedan is going to bear a K9 nomenclature when it goes on sale in South Korea. The K9 nomenclature was picked to better fit with the other Korean market models, such as Kia K5 (Optima) and Kia K7 (Cadenza), state Kia representatives.

Set to go on sale in South Korean market in summer this year, the all-new K9 flagship model will also be sold outside of Korea, though the name and exact timings for overseas launches won’t be revealed until later this year.

Exterior design of the Kia K9

New Kia K9 is the latest continuation of the automaker’s evolving design DNA, carrying its corporate tiger-nose grille and high-tech LED headlamps, with classic design echoes in its voluminous hood.  Viewed from the front, the all-new K9 luxury sedan presents an imposing and characterful image.

Furthermore, the GT-concept inspired RWD sedan features a sophisticated and bold profile with strong side character line and the innovative and stable rear view with its high-tech LED combination lamps, luxurious chrome garnish and bumper-integrated muffler, completes the parameters for whole new level of luxury car design.

Kia K9 powertrain technology

We have learned that the all-new Kia K9 shares its underpinnings with Hyundai’s Equus and Genesis sedans. The South Korean carmaker has not released any details and specifications about the engine line-up yet, but we believe that the K9 will likely adopt a highly-advanced V6 and V8 engines from Genesis sedan.

I don’t care what cars it “looks” like. All I care is that it is a big, heavy, RWD, large sedan, and I hope to own one when it goes on sale. Of course, in addition to my 2013 Sedona 😀

Did you guys see the silver K9 pictures? SPECTACULAR!

Greg, are you really going to pop for a new 2013 Kia Sedona? Cool! I am not sure I like the looks of this new Kia K9, but I’ll wait for the thing to come out and then make my call on it. I just don’t like “big” cars. I’m looking at maybe trading in our Lancer GTS in about 4 or 5 years for a Mitsubishi Outlander Hybrid or a Lancer GTS Hybrid. We’ve only got 80,881 miles right now on our 2008 Mitsubishi Lancer GTS. Loving it immensely. It’s in tip-top shape and actually tredges through the northern Idaho panhandle snow pretty well.

@ Bryan, yes I will for sure be opting for a 2013 Sedona as soon as I can get my hands on one. My 06 is over 200,000 miles, and I have been putting on 250+ daily. It is getting really tired. Not to mention, I burn through more than a half tank of gas a day. Looking forward to having an I4 to pull me around. I don’t need more than that, as my grandma accelerates faster than I do in her Rondo. I need the gas mileage. 27 MPG from the 3.8L just isn’t cutting it.
